RHINOPLASTY (NOSE JOB)
Rhinoplasty, also referred to as “nose job” or “nose reshaping” is one of the most popular procedures in plastic surgery. Rhinoplasty makes the nose beautiful and overall enhances facial harmony. It can change the size, shape and proportions of the nose and can also correct impaired breathing caused by structural defects.
According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, rhinoplasty is the third most popular cosmetic surgery with a patient satisfaction rate of 91% (data from realself.com)
A good nose job can practically transform a face!
What can rhinoplasty achieve?
Rhinoplasty can create the best nose shape for patient’s face by:
- Reducing a prominent bump or hump
- Narrowing the nasal tip to streamline a bulbous nose
- Lifting a droopy tip or bring down an upturned tip
- Straightening a crooked bridge
- Fixing asymmetry
- Balancing facial features by giving a shorter or smaller nose
- Reshaping the nostrils
Rhinoplasty to resolve breathing issues - Functional Rhinoplasty:
It is very common for an asymmetrical nose to be associated with nasal breathing deficiency.
Although a deviated septum is the most common cause for obstructed airway, hypertrophic nasal conchae or narrow nasal valves are often responsible for breathing problems.
Septoplasty, treatment of hypertrophic nasal conchae and nasal valves reconstruction, all part of the so called Function Rhinoplasty can be combined with Cosmetic Rhinoplasty in order to achieve both great looks and effortless nasal breathing.
Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?
You can be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if:
- Your facial growth is complete
- You are healthy
- You are a non-smoker
- You have realistic expectations
Before rhinoplasty:
-
You should take certain medications or adjust your current medications
-
Stop smoking
-
Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements
The procedure:
Rhinoplasty can be performed with the open (Open Rhinoplasty) or closed (Closed Rhinoplasty) method.
Dr Pagkalos uses either Open or Closed Rhinoplasty to address different patients’ anatomy and different desired aesthetic outcomes.
Dr Pagkalos applies the principles of minimal invasive surgery to the modern rhinoplasty techniques allowing for minimal tissue trauma, better aesthetic outcomes and faster recovery time when compared to conventional rhinoplasty.
During the procedure the skin that covers nasal bones is gently raised allowing for full access to reshape the structure of the nose. Rhinoplasty includes but not limited to reshaping the septum and the nasal bones, shortening the nose, reshaping the nostrils, straightening the septum, reshaping the cartilages and reshaping the tip. Using a donor cartilage is nowadays a common practice to enhance the shape or the nose or add support to the tip.
Modern rhinoplasty is a technically demanding procedure. Even a nose that gives the first impression that only minor changes are needed to make it look perfect, will actually require Dr Pagkalos to work on multiple anatomical structures in order to achieve a balanced, aesthetically pleasing result.
Rhinoplasty is considered to be a state-of-art surgical procedure. Small changes can make a huge difference and surgeon’s “artistic eye” and surgical skill vastly affect the final result.
After Rhinoplasty:
- Patient can go home the same day
- A splint and/or packing may be placed inside your nose and a splint or bandages placed on the outside to support and protect the new structures during initial healing.
- Skin sutures (used in Open Rhinoplasty) are removed in 7 days.
- Patient should protect nose from impacts/trauma.
Although final results cannot be assessed before 1 year post-op, most of the swelling goes away in 3 months and, in 6 months, one can make a good estimation of what the final result will be.
Pros:
- Rhinoplasty has a 91% “worth rating score”, being one of the cosmetic procedures with the highest patient satisfaction rate.
- Good results can significantly boost your self-confidence.
- Nose reshaping surgery balances facial features.
- Rhinoplasty is an outpatient surgey, so patients go home the same day.
- When using minimal invasive techniques, the recovery is practically pain-free. What bothers patients the most is the congested feeling associated with internal packing, a feeling that goes away when packing is removed, usually 24 hrs post-op.
- A functional rhinoplasty can help resolve chronic breathing problems.
